Even though it's the season of holiday parties, galas and gift-giving, take a moment to evaluate whether you're shrinking or expanding -- and I'm not referring to your waistline. When it comes to your personal and professional goals, It's easy to get distracted this time of year as everyone begins to succumb to the stresses of the season. You may be tempted to put your goals on the proverbial back burner thinking, "that will just have to be my new year's resolution."

Consider that inertia is always pulling your personal and professional growth in one of two ways - at any given time, you're either shrinking or expanding. Perhaps you've just completed an intense project that required many hours of your time each week. Congratulations! Now, if you haven't added anything else to your plate, consider you're shrinking - a normal reaction to the internal voice that insists on "taking a break."

But as long as you're responsible with your time and you can manage your existence system (i.e., your schedule, calendar, palm pilot, to-do list etc.) feel free to jump on another committee, take a class, coach little league or learn salsa! Whatever lights you up. Personal fulfillment comes naturally when you know you've met the coerciveness of life head on and have given it all you've got! No sitting on the sidelines here!

Regardless of what your projects are, this is a good time to pause, reflect and take stock in your greatest asset... you!

Make a list of all of your accomplishments you've achieved this year - even the little things like sewing a button on a coat, and celebrate those accomplishments with pride. Then list all of the things you intended to accomplish this year and didn't. Did you want to start your own business? Buy an investment property? Clean your closet?

If you are committed to expanding, take plain index cards and list your top three goals from your wish list on separate cards in large lettering. On the back side of the card list three small things you can do that will move you closer to your goal. Now place these cards in your wallet. Whenever you're in a waiting room, on the elevator or find yourself with a few extra minutes, take out your cards and glance at them. Cross off any action items that you have done each time you look at them.

I know you're busy this season, but staying focused on what's important to you will put you in that 3% of the population who is committed to their goals regardless of circumstances. Chances are you won't even have to 'make extra time' to do your action items. Just by keeping them with you and reviewing them in your free time, you will likely find that opportunities for action will come to you!
