The Anatomy of A Goal

“Setting goals is a vital part of success. Some people do it as a matter of habit; some do it once in a while, and some are so disappointed by past failures that the mere mention of goals or goal-setting makes them very uncomfortable,” explains leading goal-setting expert and author Jayne Johnson.

No matter where you are with your goal-setting ability, it helps to know the anatomy of a goal.

1) It’s all about you.
No matter how much you may want to set goals for other people, you can only make a difference working on your own goals. If you want to create goals for a group of people or an organization, all must be aligned with the goal.

2) Write it down.
Simply writing down your goals will set the universe in motion toward meeting your intention halfway.

3) Clearly define it.
Your goals should be as specific as possible. For example: “I intend to generate three responses from my email newsletter.”

4) Create a start and end date.
Specify the date and time by when you intend to start and complete your goal. “I intend to generate three responses from my August newsletter by August 20th at 12 midnight.”

5) Stand on your ‘tippy toes.’Aim high and challenge yourself.
There’s no great sense of accomplishment when you reward yourself for ordinary actions. The fruit is always sweeter when you have to climb out on the ‘skinny branches’ to get it.
